Ford hints at Mustang changes for car’s 50th anniversary

Ford will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Mustang next year, and though sales for the popular pony car have declined in the U.S., the American automaker is seeing its global appeal increase.

And with new buying trends come change. Raj Nair, Ford’s vice president of global product development, wouldn’t say much to The Detroit News about what consumers can expect, but hinted that keeping things fresh was key.

“We’ve got a strong idea of what a Mustang is,” he said in the Detroit New. “That’s what the Mustang will always be.”

(Talk about vague.)

But Mustang has seen a lot of competition from Chevy in recent years, so major changes are inevitable. The story said that the Camaro has topped the Mustang in annual sales in the U.S. for three consecutive years, though the difference is about only 1,400 cars.

As Ford expands its market, Nair said that the concept of the auto won’t change.

“It’s an American icon, but it’s not solely an American passion. There’s always regulatory requirements, but relative to the car, a Mustang is a Mustang.”
