Toyota teases 4Runner concept before official debut

From Toyota:

Toyota will stage the world debut of the redesigned 2014 4Runner mid-size SUV on Saturday, April 27 at 1:15 p.m. PDT at the 2013 Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, Calif., near Palm Springs. The event marks the automaker’s first-ever public reveal at a major music festival.

The Toyota 4Runner, now in its fifth generation, has been in the Toyota SUV lineup for nearly three decades and continues to be one of the few fully capable SUVs available in its segment. The 4Runner combines rugged body-on-frame construction with suspension technology that yields ride comfort more often associated with car-based platforms. 4Runner is available in a variety of configurations and in three models: a well-equipped SR5, top-of-the-line Limited, plus a Trail grade for amazing off-road capability.

Returning for its seventh year as presenting sponsor of Stagecoach, California’s premier country music festival, Toyota will kick off the three-day event with vintage circus-themed fan experiences followed by the unveiling of the 2014 4Runner. The reveal takes place on a unique Toyota stage and will be hosted by SiriusXM™ radio personality, Buzz Brainard with a very special performance by chart-topping country recording artist, Dierks Bentley.

As part of the reveal celebration, Toyota invites fans to enter a sweepstakes from April 25-29 for a chance to win one of six guitars autographed by Dierks Bentley. Information and official rules can be found on the Toyota USA Facebook page and at http://www.toyota.com/stagecoachsweepstakes/terms.html.

Toyota World of Wonders
In addition to the 4Runner festivities, Toyota will host the World of Wonders, a whimsical atmosphere of carnival curiosities where music fans can take a break from the desert sun. On-site activities include:

Camry Claw – A custom-built Camry with an arcade-style claw machine operated through the sunroof offers a chance at fun prizes.
RAV4 Palm Reader – Guests can get a glimpse into the future and find out if their wishes will be granted.
Tacoma Charging Station – A rapid-charging station will be available for guests to recharge their mobile devices.
Tundra Strongman – Guests can see how their strength measures up to Toyota’s full-size pickup truck.
Carnival Arcade – This retro-styled game zone is outfitted with a ring toss and milk jug throw.
Cooling Zone – Music fans can lounge under misters in an attempt to beat the heat.
Big Top Photo Booth – Guests can accessorize themselves with circus-themed props for a personalized photo opportunity.

Toyota World of Wonders will also feature hourly line dancing lessons, temporary tattoo parlor and leather accessory creation station. Off-road racing legend Ivan “Ironman” Stewart will also be on hand to greet fans, sign autographs and provide driving demos throughout the weekend. Stagecoach commemorative silkscreen posters and cooling bandanas will also be available while supplies last. Toyota World of Wonders activities will operate Friday through Sunday from noon until 8:00 p.m. PDT unless otherwise specified.

GM may consider offering compact diesel in the U.S.

According to AutoBlog.com, General Motors’ North American boss Mark Reuss said the automaker is looking at offering a diesel motor in its light duty trucks, but no other details have been offered.

The site said that the line of turbo diesel-powered Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks sold in other markets made them solid candidates for consideration.

For a few years now, some U.S. consumers have wanted Toyota to offer the Hilux in the U.S. The compact pickup currently sold in the UK and Australia has a diesel engine that puts up impressive numbers for its size and weight. In addition to offering better fuel economy, it has a towing capacity of up to 5,512 pounds. Not too bad.

If there’s a demand for the Hilux in the U.S., why not let an American automaker try to offer something first?

Toyota releases official details on recalled Tacomas

Report Date: November 27, 2012 at 12:11 PM
NHTSA Campaign ID number: 12V542000

Vehicle Model Year(s) Make / Model: 2001-2004 TOYOTA / TACOMA
Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
Report Receipt Date: NOV 23, 2012
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 12V542000

Component: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
Potential Number of Units Affected: 150,000

Summary:
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Tacoma light trucks manufactured from August 28, 2000, through August 27, 2004, and originally sold, or currently registered, in the following cold climate states with high road salt usage: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The spare tire in the subject vehicles is located underneath the rear of the vehicle and held by a spare tire carrier. A lift plate on the carrier is used to help raise, lower and retain the tire. During its manufacture, the lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with anti-corrosion materials. If the plate is insufficiently coated and the vehicle is operated in cold climate regions where road salts are frequently used, road spray can reach the carrier assembly and corrode the lift plate.

Consequence:
Corrosion of the plate could cause it to break, which could result in detachment of the spare tire from the vehicle. Detachment of the spare tire could result in a road hazard which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Remedy:
A remedy for this defect is currently being developed. Toyota will notify owners when a remedy plan has been finalized. The recall is expected to begin during December 2012. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Notes:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Driver documents bad experience driving behind Prius

We’ve all been stuck behind that one annoying driver.

They won’t let you merge.

They drive too slow.

They follow too closely behind you … and you’re already running 90+.

Check out this guy’s experience with an aggressive Prius driver who just won’t cut him any slack on the highway.

Of course, if you were caught dead in a Prius, you probably wouldn’t be a happy driver either.

Ford, General Motors and Chrysler see pick-up truck sales increase

Signs of a recovering economy can often be seen by the vehicles that are being bought, and it appears that there is a glimmer of good news coming from Detroit.

According to The Detroit Free Press, each American automaker is seeing an increase in sales of its full-size pick-up trucks.

Translation: The rising demand shows that businesses need to replace aging trucks and feel more confident about the recovery of the U.S. housing market, the story said. With a better housing market, businesses will need trucks to haul crews and equipment.

The Ford F-150 has been known for years as the top-selling vehicle in America, but could there be an American competitor that could take over for the year?

Maybe not yet.

Chrysler’s Ram and Ford’s F-series each saw a 19% sales increase over last month, while General Motors’ Chevy Silverado rose 4% and the GMC Sierra was up 9%, the Detroit Free Press reported. Also, Toyota’s Tundra saw an increase of 68%.

Because of the increase of pick-up trucks being purchased, the total U.S. auto sales come out to 14.5 million, the best monly sales pace since 2009’s “Cash for Clunkers Program” the story said.
