How the next-gen GTO almost came to be

How the next-gen GTO almost came to be

Street Legal TV reports that a column from Bob Lutz on Road and Track’s website says that the next-gen Pontiac GTO almost came to be.

Bob was asked, “If you could do the GTO program all over again, what would you change?”

Bob said that Pontiac actually had a full-size model of what would have been the next GTO that was a two-door, four-passenger coupe that used the same architecture as the G8 sedan.

You can thank the recession for the axe on that project.

1970 GTO sports two blowers

This 1970 GTO sports a 474 cubic-inch Pontiac engine with a 8-71 blower on top of a 6-71. The owner of the muscle car says in the YouTube description that he’s going to a single 8-71 blower for racing purposes, and the idea behind both blowers wasn’t for enhanced power, but so that it stood out.

Gearheads pick up pieces of fallen soldier’s GTO project

Major Jeffrey R. Calero was an avid muscle car enthusiast who stayed busy working on his 1970 Pontiac GTO when he wasn’t serving his country. Unfortunately, Major Calero lost his life when an IED detonated while he was on a reconnaissance patrol in Afghanistan in 2007.

According to Hemmings Daily, a group of gearheads got together and decided to honor him by initiating the completion of the fallen soldier’s GTO restoration. Paul DiMauro of Paul’s Rides & Restos has taken the lead on the project and hopes to present the car to Calero’s family in June, Hemmings Daily said.

DiMauro said in the article that the GTO required extensive sheetmetal repair, including a complete floor pan, trunk floor, quarter panels, left-side door, hood, radiator support and lower fender repair panels. He said that nearly everything had to be replaced, but it has been a really rewarding project.
