Gone in a Flash: Mopar ’14 Dodge Challenger is Sold Out

From Chrysler:

If you blinked, you missed it. The limited-edition Mopar ’14 Challenger, the latest Chrysler Group LLC vehicle to come straight from the factory already upgraded with Mopar products, has sold out in just the first day after being made available to dealers.

The Mopar ’14 Challenger is the most recent limited-edition vehicle offered by the brand, continuing the success of the Mopar ’10 Challenger, Mopar ’11 Charger, Mopar ’12 300 and Mopar ’13 Dart in demonstrating how owners can personalize their rides with Mopar products — even before driving away from the dealership. With only 100 built, the Mopar ’14 Challenger is the rarest limited-production Dodge Challenger offered to date.

“The very high demand for the Mopar ’14 Challenger spotlights the success of our limited-edition, Mopar-modified vehicles, and also clearly demonstrates the passion our customers have for personalizing their rides,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “Whether during or after the ordering process, Mopar is there to help put a personal touch on customers’ rides.”

“The Mopar ’14 Challenger shows that when combining a legendary car like the Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker and making it even more exclusive, we create collectible performance machines unlike anything else on the road,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO of Dodge Brand. “From the Mopar ’14 Challenger to the new Scat Pack performance stage kits available on Challenger, Charger and Dart, you can continue to expect great things when Dodge and Mopar team up.”

Many unique features contributed to the Mopar ’14 Challenger’s quick sellout, including two exterior color options and three Mopar Blue stripe options. A 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine also rumbles beneath the Satin Black Shaker hood scoop, while exterior design elements include 20 x 8-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels with Mopar center caps, a unique Black Vapor grille surround, a black fuel-filler door, a Satin Black deck-lid spoiler with Gloss Black “Mopar Design” badge and “Mopar” quarter-glass decals.

The interior is upgraded with premium leather seats featuring Mopar Blue accent thread and Mopar Omega M logos embroidered on the seat backs. Other unique touches for the limited-edition ride include a serialized instrument panel plaque, “Mopar” branded key fobs, a custom-crafted personalized owner’s kit with a Mopar ’14 brochure and much, much more.

Customers ordering the Mopar ’14 showed they still wanted the rarest limited production Dodge Challenger offered to date with additional customization.  Of the 100 orders placed on the first day, 52 customers chose the Pitch Black exterior paint version, while 48 opted for the newly offered Bright White option. The traditional Shaker stripe proved to be the most popular graphic chosen for their ride, followed by the bodyside decal and then the rocker stripe. Top Custom Shop options chosen were hood pins, Mopar Performance badges, quad exhaust tips and the Challenger monogrammed car cover. The top-ordered Mopar Performance part was the Cat-back exhaust to complement the Shaker intake. Although all 100 Mopar ’14 Challenger vehicles have been spoken for, enthusiasts can still build their own similarly personalized and unique, one-of-one Dodge Challenger.

Customers taking delivery of a new Dodge Challenger can have their ride personalized in a similar way to the sold out version right at their local dealership. Existing owners who have their own Challenger pride and joy at home also can have their vehicle updated with Mopar parts and accessories to make it similar to the sold out version.
Many of the up-fitted items for the Dodge Challenger are offered through Mopar’s vast catalog of parts and accessories available at Mopar.com or an authorized dealership. Among the products found on the Mopar ’14 that are available for customization are:

• Mopar short-throw shifter
• Mopar cat-back exhaust
• Mopar performance suspension
• Mopar lowering springs
• Mopar Electronic Vehicle Tracking System (EVTS)

Modified Chevrolet Bowtie Makes Z/28 Even Cooler – literally

From Chevy:

In developing the 2014 Camaro Z/28, the team scrutinized every component looking for ways to improve track performance, lap after lap. Even the iconic Chevrolet bowtie faced audit.

During aerodynamics testing, Powertrain Cooling Development engineer Richard Quinn noticed that the bowtie on the Z/28’s grill was displacing air away from the radiator, which can impact engine cooling – an important aspect for all vehicles, especially track-oriented cars.

Removing the bowtie altogether did not seem to be an appropriate solution. Instead, Quinn took a cut-off wheel to the gold fill of the bowtie, leaving the silver outline intact. He installed the prototype on the grill and retested to see the results.

“There are engineers in our team that race as a hobby,” said Quinn, “and we used that racer’s mindset to look for ways small or large to get better performance out of the Z/28. Even the smallest details on the Z/28 were weighed for cooling benefit, and this is one that stuck.”

The “Flowtie,” as the engineers now affectionately refer to it, is just the chrome outline of the traditional bowtie, with the center removed. This simple solution alone was enough to allow three additional cubic meters of air into the engine per minute. Engineers found the Flowtie dropped the temperatures of engine coolant and engine oil by 2°F (1.2°C) during extended track sessions. That seemingly small improvement was enough to justify making the Flowtie standard on every new Z/28.

“The Flowtie is just one example of the team’s focus on track performance,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “That same attention to detail is evident throughout the cooling systems for the LS7 engine, as well as the carbon ceramic brakes and the differential.”

The naturally aspirated Z/28 weighs 300 pounds less than the supercharged Camaro ZL1 and 55 pounds lighter than the Camaro 1LE – with changes ranging from lightweight wheels to thinner rear-window glass.

“The Camaro Z/28 has more than 190 unique parts, compared to a Camaro SS,” Oppenheiser said. “Like the Flowtie, each of these parts were changed with one objective: to deliver incredible performance on the track – not just for the first lap, but lap, after lap, after lap.”

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 arrives in dealerships this spring.

Shelby American brings back iconic shelby GT for 2014 with world-class power, performance

Shelby American brings back iconic shelby GT for 2014 with world-class power, performance

From Shelby American:

LOS ANGELES – Nov. 21, 2013 – Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc., returned one of its most popular cars to the lineup today by unveiling the Shelby GT at the L.A. Auto Show. The new generation Shelby GT is based on the 2014 Ford Mustang GT with an incredibly attractive base price and 430 HP. The optional Shelby GT/SC supercharged model comes in either a 525HP or a staggering 624 HP version, making it the most potent version of the car ever made.

“The Shelby GT was one of the most important vehicles in modern day Shelby history,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “It kicked off Shelby’s rebirth in Las Vegas by putting a Mustang-based small block car into Ford dealerships. Ever since the Shelby GT went out of the production, people have clamored for its return.”

In 2007, Ford Division, Carroll Shelby and Ford Racing created the Shelby GT. Beginning as 4.6L Mustang GT’s assembled at Ford’s Flat Rock, Mich. plant, they were shipped to Shelby in Las Vegas for transformation. The 320HP 2007 Shelby GT coupes were all Performance White or Black with silver stripes. In 2008, Shelby added Vista Blue and a choice of coupe or convertible. About 8,000 Shelby GT’s were built.

The Shelby GT was wildly popular and the people who snagged one have been one of the most passionate owner groups. The cars were often tailored with custom parts to fit an owner’s personality and then driven hard on both the street and track. The Shelby GT totally dominated its SCCA racing class in 2007 and 2008.

“Based on the standard Mustang GT, the total cost of our entry-level 2014 Shelby GT is only about $45,000, yet offers so much more than the previous model,” said, Gary Patterson, Shelby American VP of Sales. “The performance-to-price ratio makes the Shelby GT perfect for any serious pony car enthusiast.”

The new Shelby GT is a post-title program; Ford dealers send a customer’s Mustang GT coupe or convertible to Shelby for upfit. Every material performance aspect of the car is enhanced or replaced to create a potent, balanced performer worthy of the Shelby name. Entry-level package upgrades include a Ford Racing suspension, Shelby branded exhaust, intake and engine tune for 430 HP, specially designed wheels and tires, short shifter, hood and Le Mans stripes that make it uniquely Shelby. Every Shelby GT version is 50 state emissions legal and runs on pump gas.

One of the car’s most appealing aspects is the opportunity for personalization. Choosing from an array of options, customers can opt for a more hard-edged suspension, better braking and supercharger upgrades, as well as a vast selection of performance and styling parts from Shelby Performance Parts.

“While the Shelby GT is very affordable for such an exclusive vehicle, a post title program allows us to take performance to new levels,” said Shelby American VP of Production, Gary Davis. “Working with partners like Ford Racing, it is docile enough to be a daily driver and still dominate the track on the weekends.”

The 624 HP Shelby GT/SC version is expected to blast from 0-60 mph in about 3.7 seconds; the quarter mile time should be in the mid 11 second range. The car should also pull over 1 G on the lateral skid-pad.

“No other carmaker offers this level of performance, heritage and iconic styling at this price, making the Shelby GT the best all-around American car in its class,” said Luft. “Each car will be issued a Shelby American CSM number for documentation in our Shelby American Worldwide Registry to help maximize potential future value.”

The price of the base Shelby GT package, not including the car, is $14,995, making a nicely equipped car about $45,000 in total. The Shelby GT/SC package begins at $27,995. Customers can build their Shelby GT online at www.shelbyamerican.com/2014shelbygt.

Monte Carlo owner shows off ride, Halloween spirit

This video should get you in the Halloween spirit.

myPowerBlock member “Lavarr King” posted this video to www.mypowerblock.com. We won’t give away what he does in the video, but let’s just say that not only does he show off the power under the hood, but you can see he has a bit of a sense of humor.

According to his myPowerBlock profile, his custom 1971 Monte Carlo has a 540 and a 400 turbo Super Street Fighter transmission.

After you’re done watching the video, you may have to chance your pants … either from laughing or having the crap scared out of you.

Gen 5 Camaro Performance Parts Released: Factory engineered Chevrolet accessories can preserve vehicle warranty

Gen 5 Camaro Performance Parts Released - Factory engineered Chevrolet accessories can preserve vehicle warranty

From General Motors:

DETROIT – Chevrolet Performance has released a comprehensive collection of factory-engineered performance parts and accessories for fifth-generation Camaros, 2010 model year and newer. Many of the parts preserve the vehicle warranty when installed by a Chevrolet dealer – an advantage aftermarket installers cannot provide.

The portfolio of parts is designed to make “Gen 5” Camaro V-6 and SS models more capable on the street and track and includes components from the high-performance Camaro ZL1 and the road racing-oriented Camaro SS 1LE package.

For customers interested in drag racing or high-horsepower projects, Chevrolet Performance offers the new ZL1 rear driveline system. It is the strongest independent rear axle option available for the Camaro, featuring a 9.9-inch rear differential mounted in a robust cast iron center section (vs. the aluminum center section in SS and V-6 models) and additional high-strength components.

For customers interested in road-racing or improved handling, Chevrolet Performance offers suspension components from the Camaro 1LE, which is homologated for competition in SCCA’s T2 class. The same components in the Chevrolet Performance 1LE Track Pack enabled a production Camaro SS 1LE to circle Virginia International Raceway in less than three minutes.

“Chevrolet Performance is the first stop for owners building a competitive, durable Camaro for the track,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports. “These Chevrolet Performance parts are based on Chevrolet factory-validated production components that were tested on racetracks and validated to standards unmatched in the aftermarket industry. Quite simply, they’re tailored for improved performance and built to the highest standards.”

The parts are available directly from Chevrolet dealers, which can be found on the dealer locator at chevroletperformance.com or chevrolet.com.

Camaro ZL1 components:

– ZL1 front brake kit for Camaro SS (part number 22959672) – It includes racing-style front two-piece, 14.6-inch front rotors and six-piston Brembo calipers with aluminum housings and ZL1 logo. The kit includes two rotors, two calipers, brake pads and mounting hardware. It is a direct replacement for Camaro SS. It works with production chassis controls, including StabiliTrak, traction control and antilock brakes, and does not void the vehicle warranty.
– ZL1 rear brake kit for Camaro SS (part number 23104466) – It complements the ZL1 front brake kit with ZL1-logo calipers. The kit includes two calipers, brake pads and installation hardware. It works with production chassis controls, including StabiliTrak, traction control and antilock brakes, and does not void the vehicle warranty.
– ZL1 front/rear brake kit for Camaro V-6 (part number 22989384) – Upgrades the front and rear brakes for 2010-and-later Camaro V-6 models with the 14.6-inch front and 14.4-inch rear brake components from the ZL1. The kit includes two front, two-piece rotors and six-piston calipers, two rear single-piece rotors and four-piston calipers, brake pads, master cylinder and installation hardware. Twenty-inch wheels are required for caliper clearance. It works with production chassis controls, including StabiliTrak, traction control and antilock brakes, and does not void the vehicle warranty.
– ZL1 short-throw shifter (part number 19299460) – Quicker, more precise-feeling gear changes are enabled by the ZL1’s 5.1-ratio shifter. It is a direct replacement for the six-speed manual transmission shifter in the Camaro SS. Does not void vehicle warranty.
– ZL1 low-restriction air filter element (part number 92229651) – Direct replacement for the air filter element in 2010-13 Camaro SS models, enhancing LS3/L99 engine performance by reducing induction restrictions. It does not void the vehicle warranty.
– ZL1 fuel pump (part number 19260557) – Fits all 2010-and-later SS and V-6 models. This twin-pump design is designed meet the high-rpm fuel requirements of a supercharged engine. It delivers approximately 250 liters per hour at 65 psi (450 kPa).
– ZL1 rear driveline system (part number 22959394 for manuals and 22959395 for automatics) – This is the ZL1’s complete rear axle system, which is significantly stronger than the Camaro SS rear axle system. The kit includes a larger, stronger 9.9-inch ring gear with a heavy-duty limited-slip differential in a cast iron housing; stronger driveshaft and stronger asymmetrical half-shafts, which include a 60mm hollow shaft on the right and a 33mm solid shaft on the left. Their different torsional stiffness rates work in conjunction with the limited-slip differential to minimize the chance of wheel hop at launch. The kit is a direct bolt-in for the Camaro SS and V-6 models, although additional parts may be required for installation. Manual transmission kits feature a 3.73 axle ratio and automatic transmission kits have a 3.23 ratio.

Camaro 1LE components:

– 1LE Track Pack (part number 23123398 for V-6 and 23123397 for SS) – This suspension kit features the same suspension components used in the production 1LE performance package. Content includes a larger, 27mm solid front stabilizer bar, and 28mm solid rear stabilizer bar for improved body roll, retuned front struts and new monotube rear shocks for improved body and wheel control, and stiffer toe links and rear shock mounts for improved performance. It works with production chassis controls, including StabiliTrak, traction control and antilock brakes, and does not void the vehicle warranty.
– 1LE strut tower brace (part number 22756880) – This bolt-on component fits 2011-and-later Camaro SS and V-6 models, delivering greater stiffness to the front body structure to enhance the turn-in feel and supports quicker, more direct-feeling steering inputs. Does not void vehicle warranty.
– 1LE PCV valve (part number 12653073) – Ensures oil separation and drain-back during high-load cornering. Does not void vehicle warranty.

Camaro SS components:

– SS brake kit for Camaro V-6 (part number 23120542) – Upgrades the front and rear brakes for 2010-and-later Camaro V-6 models with the Brembo front and rear brake components from the SS. It is a more economical option for customers who want greater brake performance, but don’t need the performance of the ZL1 brakes. The kit includes two front rotors and calipers, two rear rotors and calipers, brake pads, master cylinder and installation hardware. It works with production chassis controls, including StabiliTrak, traction control and antilock brakes, and does not void the vehicle warranty.

LS3 heads / LS7 camshaft package (part number 19300535)

Developed by the same powertrain engineers who work on Chevrolet’s motorsports programs, this power-building kit was developed as a direct replacement for the factory-installed heads and camshaft on 2010-and-later Camaro SS models, adding up to 40 horsepower. The kit includes CNC-ported LS3 cylinder heads, which flow more than 350 cfm (intake side) with 276cc intake runners and 2.165/1.590-inch valves. The high-lift LS7 camshaft makes the most of the heads’ airflow capabilities, with 0.558/0.558-inch lift and 211 degrees/230 degrees duration at 0.050-inch and a 121-degree lobe separation angle. Contents include the camshaft and fully assembled cylinder heads. Head gaskets and cylinder head bolts must be purchased separately. Tuning is required. This kit fits other LS-family engines with at least 4.000-inch bores.

COPO components for the drag strip

Chevrolet Performance also offers many of the specialty and high-performance components used in the COPO Camaro, allowing racers to build their own Camaro race car. They include components such as the unique COPO Camaro hood (part number 22950678) and COPO-logo gauges.
