Chrysler delay’s 2014 Jeep Cherokee media preview

Chrysler delay's 2014 Jeep Cherokee media preview

Chrysler has told The Detroit Free Press that it’s delaying the media’s preview of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee because of electronic issues controlling the engine and nine-speed transmission.

The automaker said in a statement that during the final weeks of testing, the company has discovered an opportunity to further improve the power train calibration of the Cherokee.

Though Chrysler is delaying the media preview, the company added that they will still plan on shipping the 2014 Cherokees to dealers by September.

Ram Announces New EcoDiesel Max Towing Number

Ram Announces New EcoDiesel Max Towing Number

From Ram:

– 2014 Ram 1500 with 305 horsepower Pentastar V-6 tows 7,450 lbs., topping all base V-6 engines in the segment

– More robust parking system components inside the exclusive 8-speed transmission allow for greater tow rating

– 3.0-liter EcoDiesel towing capacity rated at 9,200 lbs. – approaching large V-8 capability

– No direct competitor for new Ram 1500 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel with best-in-class fuel economy that will exceed the current title holder, Ram’s 3.6-liter V-6 gas engine at 25 MPG

The capability race is far from over. The 2014 Ram 1500 takes top spot in V-6 towing capacity at 7,450 lbs. To reach the best-in-class number, Ram powertrain engineers added a more robust parking gear to the exclusive 8-speed TorqueFlite 8 for a higher capacity rating.

“There was more towing capacity in the V-6 Ram 1500 but we needed to upgrade the transmission to hold the truck and trailer when parked on steep grades,” said Mike Cairns – Chief Engineer, Ram Truck. “Now that we’re building the transmissions ourselves, the improvements are included in the new assembly. ”

Ram also finalized the maximum towing number for the exclusive Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. In a 2WD, two-door, long bed configuration, the new EcoDiesel will tow up to 9,200 lbs. The new diesel engine approaches much larger displacement V-8 towing capability with a small but powerful 3.0-liter V-6 and best-in-class fuel efficiency of better than 25 MPG on the highway.

Consumer Reports: Ram 1500 ranks at top in Consumer Reports’ tests of full-size pickups

Ram 1500 ranks at top in Consumer Reports' tests of full-size pickups

From Consumer Reports:

YONKERS, NY- The freshened 2013 Ram 1500 now tops Consumer Reports’ rankings of, full-size pickups, delivering impressive performance and outpointing strong competitors, both domestic and foreign.

“The Ram 1500 is surprisingly luxurious and refined-but still fully capable of doing hard work when needed,” said Jake Fisher, director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut. “Continued interior and powertrain improvements make the Ram a particularly well-rounded choice.”

For 2013, the Ram got a lighter and stiffer frame, a revised interior with a new infotainment system, and updated powertrains. Consumer Reports tested a four-wheel-drive Ram 1500 Crew Cab, with the most popular engine option-the 5.7-liter Hemi V8-and the new efficient eight-speed automatic transmission. The combination delivers seamless power and still returns a class-leading 15 mpg overall in CR’s own fuel economy tests.

The complete tests and ratings of the Ram 1500 appear on www.ConsumerReports.org. Updated daily, ConsumerReports.org is the go-to Website for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information. Check out CR’s ongoing Twitter feed at @CRCars.

The Ram 1500 earned a 78-point overall road test score. Other tested full-size pickups include, the Toyota Tundra (69) and the iconic Ford F-150 (68). Consumer Reports is evaluating the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and will announce its findings later this summer. First impressions are that the Silverado is a well-rounded and refined truck that will strongly challenge the Ram in our Ratings. Ford’s F-150 will be redesigned for 2015.

While the Chevrolet Avalanche currently outscores the Ram by two points, Avalanche production ended after the current 2013 model year.

Prior versions of the Ram have been reliable so Consumer Reports is Recommending the freshened truck. To be Recommended, a vehicle must perform well in CR’s battery of tests, have average or better reliability in CR’s Annual Auto Survey and perform well in government and industry crash tests.

The Ram delivers one of the best rides of any pickup, thanks to its unique coil spring rear suspension. It has a super-quiet, super-roomy crew cab, and the optional UConnect infotainment touch screen is one of the best in the business. On the downside, the step up to the cabin is very high, and-unlike some other pickups-the Ram’s tailgate isn’t damped or sprung, so it’s heavy.

Consumer Reports is the world’s largest independent product-testing organization. Using its more than 50 labs, auto test center, and survey research center, the nonprofit rates thousands of products and services annually. Building on the award-winning truck, the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will further stretch its best-in-class fuel economy title lead and continue to raise the innovation bar in one of the automotive industry’s most customer-loyal segments.

POWERTRAIN

The 2014 Ram 1500 continues the brand’s quest of re-defining the half-ton full-size pickup class with the introduction of an exclusive small displacement turbo diesel engine that delivers a best-in-class combination of torque and fuel efficiency.

Aptly branded EcoDiesel, the new 3.0-liter powerplant is a turbocharged 60-degree, dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) 24-valve V-6 that produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque is noticeably more efficient than all V-6 gasoline engines in the half-ton category.

Like the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 gasoline engines already offered on the Ram 1500, the new EcoDiesel V-6 will be mated to the TorqueFlite 8, the only eight-speed automatic transmission offered in the half-ton class.

The new EcoDiesel – developed and manufactured by VM Motor (a Chrysler supplier since 1992) – is one of the most advanced diesel engines in the marketplace. Equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter, and selective catalytic reduction, it will be emissions-compliant in all 50 states.

The new Ram 1500 also is equipped with a capless fuel filler system for re-filling convenience.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine (Ward’s 10 Best Engines Award three years in a row) with variable-valve timing (VVT) offers 305 horsepower, 269 lb.-ft. of torque and best-in-class fuel economy for V-6 engine trucks. The Pentastar V-6 features 42 percent more horsepower, 13 percent more torque and at least 20 percent better fuel economy when compared to the previous 3.7-liter V-6 powertrain. The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 with fuel-saving cylinder shut-off and VVT provides 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque.

The class-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission (TorqueFlite 8), standard equipment with 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel and 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar, doubles the amount of gears compared to the previously available four-speed automatic transmission, which improves drivability and enhances fuel efficiency. The eight-speed also is available with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8.

When the 2014 Ram 1500 full-size pickup arrives in retail outlets the fourth quarter of calendar year 2013, it will establish what is unmistakably the most advanced and efficient powertrain portfolio in the light-duty category, as evidenced by:

Exclusive offering of a small-displacement turbo diesel engine (EcoDiesel V-6)

Exclusive offering of an eight-speed automatic transmission (8HP45 with Pentastar V-6,
8HP70 with HEMI V-8 and EcoDiesel V-6)

Unsurpassed torque

Best-in-Class V-6 gasoline engine fuel efficiency (Pentastar V-6)
Best-in-Class combination of power and fuel efficiency in a V-8 engine
(HEMI V-8 mated with eight-speed transmission)

Only manufacturer in light-duty class to offer diesel, gasoline, and flex-fuel
(E85 capable 3.6-liter V-6) engines.

ENGINEERING

Beginning in model year 2014, the Ram 1500 will offer a front park assist system, a first time offering on a full-size Ram pickup truck.

The system uses four sensors located on the front bumper. The bezel-less, integrated sensors sequentially send out ultrasonic waves when the vehicle is driven in forward at low speeds. The system can detect objects as far away as 47.2 inches.

The sending sensor and adjacent sensors pick up the echo of a signal when it bounces off an object. Triangulation is used to determine relative distance, based on elapsed time between the outgoing signal and its return.

Readouts located in the cluster display (and audible chimes) notify the driver of front/rear object proximity.

Parasitic Loss Reduction

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is a fuel-saving technology for the Ram 1500, which reduces parasitic electrical load. The technology not only eliminates unnecessary load on the alternator but also improves the durability of benefitting systems. Fuel delivery and the forward cooling fan are two systems that take advantage of PWM, adding a 0.4 percent improvement in fuel efficiency.

The 2014 Ram 1500 will carry additional uses of PWM technology and a host of new efficiency, comfort and emissions-friendly refinements. These include a variable displacement air-conditioning compressor pulse-width modulated vent blower and humidity sensor.

Variable displacement compressor (VDC)

As opposed to a “fixed” displacement compressor, the variable displacement compressor (VDC) automatically varies its pumping capacity to meet air conditioning demands rather than working in an on/off fashion. As a result, the variable displacement compressor (VDC) lessens loads on the engine, reducing parasitic losses for enhanced fuel efficiency and helping to maintain a consistent cockpit temperature. The technology also reduces related noise and vibration annoyances.

When the interior cabin temperature is higher than what’s desired (outside the automatic temperature control setting), the VDC increases refrigeration capacity until the desired temperature is reached. Once the temperature is reached, the VDC automatically reduces its capacity to maintain the desired temperature rather than shutting off completely.

The overall result is smoother compressor transitions, less noise and greater fuel efficiency.

Pulse-width modulation blower

Like the VDC, the pulse-width modulation (PWM) blower continually controls fan speeds for optimal performance in all driving scenarios; quiet, efficient operation; and virtually unnoticeable performance. Not unlike other PWM applications that debuted on the 2013 Ram 1500, the pulse-width blower ensures an infinite amount of varying fan speeds to satisfy every customer-requested condition in relation to the air conditioning system.

Humidity sensor

The new humidity is package behind the rearview mirror, and works in tandem with the PWM blower and VDC to continually measure the potential for humidity being formed on the windshield interior. While the sensor enables noticeable de-fogging benefits, it also enables the VDC and PWM blower to run at the most optimal speeds to expedite humidity reduction.

New Air Conditioning Refrigerant

Beginning in 2014, the Ram 1500 will be the first in its competitive set to carry F1234yf refrigerant, an application developed to help reduce greenhouse emissions.

DESIGN

The 2014 Ram 1500 retains its ruggedly handsome appearance with an award winning interior (Ward’s 10 Best Interiors), exterior design aesthetics and segment-leading technology. Every Ram 1500 truck benefits from content specifically designed to match each model’s unique style.

For 2014, the Ram 1500 offers 12 different colors, including two new shades: Blue Streak and Granite Crystal; available in a monotone and/or two-tone depending on the model.

Unsurpassed powertrain warranty – five years/100,000 miles

The 2014 Ram 1500 is backed with a, five-year /100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty. The powertrain-limited warranty covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair a covered powertrain component – engine, transmission and drive system. Coverage also includes free towing to the nearest Ram dealer, if necessary. The warranty also is transferable allowing customers who sell their truck during the warranty period, to pass the coverage onto the new owner.

The standard three-year / 36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for the Ram 1500, from the body to the electrical system.

QUALITY

The 2014 Ram 1500’s quality is scrutinized at the company’s Chrysler Technology Center’s state-of-the-art scientific labs in Auburn Hills, Mich., including the Noise/Vibration/Harshness Lab, Electromagnetic Compatibility Facility, Wind Tunnel and the Road Test Simulator (RTS).

For example, the RTS recreates the abuse a truck endures at the hands of a 95th percentile driver – meaning someone who drives the vehicle in more severe conditions than 95 percent of all customers. The RTS can put a lifetime of wear and tear on a truck in about one month’s time. The Ram development team is committed to finding and fixing any issues before the customer does.

MANUFACTURING

The 2014 Ram 1500 is built at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant (Warren, Mich.), which has built more than 12.5 million trucks since it started operations in 1938. Regular Cab models of the 2014 Ram 1500 are built at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Saltillo, Mexico.

Ram Truck Brand and Warner Bros. Pictures Team up for ‘Man of Steel,’ Opening in Theaters June 14

Ram Truck Brand and Warner Bros. Pictures Team up for 'Man of Steel,' Opening in Theaters June 14

From Ram:

June 5, 2013 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – The Ram Truck brand and Warner Bros. launched a new co-branded commercial for the Ram 1500, Motor Trend magazine’s 2013 Truck of the Year, as part of a partnership promoting Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “Man of Steel,” the highly anticipated summer action adventure movie in theaters June 14.

The Chrysler Group provided vintage trucks and other vehicles to Warner Bros. for integration into key scenes in the movie.

“We are excited to partner with Warner Bros. on ‘Man of Steel,'” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, Chrysler Group LLC. “With film alignment we have a fresh consumer engagement opportunity, connecting the heroic character traits of Superman with Ram’s DNA. Our custom creative and marketing program is squarely aimed at building advocacy among passionate fans outside traditional marketing channels.”

The 30-second “Action” spot intersperses scenes from the movie and footage of the Ram truck as the voiceover says, “Everyone has the ability to do something amazing … Some just do it on a more regular basis.” It closes with the Ram logo and the words “In dealerships everywhere” followed by the “Man of Steel” logo and “in theaters everywhere June 14.” The spot can be viewed on the Ram Truck brand YouTube channel.

The key message of the television ad – how the work that Ram owners do make them superheroes in their own right – also is reinforced in print ads that will promote Ram trucks and the “Man of Steel” movie through the July 4 weekend. The Ram brand teamed up with DC Entertainment comic artist Shane Davis to create a custom illustration for the ad, which will run June 7 in the weekend edition of USA Today.

“Ram celebrates those who dare to be great and never back down from a challenge,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand. “This is the essence of Superman and also embodies our Ram truck buyers, who believe in hard work, integrity and standing up for what is right.”

The Ram interior and exterior design team created a special edition, one-of-a-kind “Man of Steel” Power Wagon truck with special “Man of Steel”-inspired design cues, colors and branding. The truck will make its debut June 10 in New York City at the world premiere of the movie. It will then be on display at special events throughout the summer and fall, including the National Finals Rodeo and State Fair of Texas, before being auctioned off for charity at a later date.

The Dark Ceramic Gray truck features a high-gloss black roof with Anodized Red grille accents, created from a durable 14-coat paint process. It has forged-aluminum, satin black 17-inch off-road wheels, Superman logos on the front grille and rear tailgate and a custom, one-off vehicle wrap inspired by the crest and texture of Superman’s suit. The wrap highlights a tone-on-tone interpretation of the iconic Superman S-shield, and helps unify themes found on the interior and exterior of the truck.

Interior features include custom mesh seat inserts reminiscent of Superman’s own suit with integrated Superman logos on the seats and console; Pewter leather seats; and Anodized Red paint trim accents on the doors, steering column, radio cluster and seats. There also is “Man of Steel” logo badging on the glove box and a “Man of Steel” screen backdrop and start-up screen on the radio cluster.

The television ad will run in network and cable entertainment, news and sports programing beginning June 4. The spot and print ads were created by the Dallas-based The Richards Group agency.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the engine stalls while driving it may increase the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank transfer tube free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during May 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler’s recall campaign number is N17.

2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 gets 392 Appearance Package

Spring-Fest-Charger11

From Drivesrt.com:

The Spring Festival of LXs, better known as Spring Fest, has become the premier annual celebration of LX-platform vehicles for SRT® and Chrysler brands. With owners from across the world gathering in Irvine, California, the event presents the perfect canvas for SRT to introduce special editions of vehicles. This year was no exception as SRT debuted a special-edition Charger 392 appearance package during the eighth annual edition of the event.

Mark Trostle, Head of SRT Design, was at Spring Fest to reveal the Charger 392, which was shown in TorRed with black accents on the hood and roof and sporting the iconic ‘392’ badge on the front fender. The 392 fender badge is gloss black with a gray insert within the 392. The interior of the Challenger 392 introduced at Spring Fest features a serialized dash plaque on the instrument panel.

“It’s a cool package,” said Trostle. “When you think of old school muscle cars, you think of black accents and this car kind of handles that in a new way. Not the whole hood is black, just a portion of it and we’ve done it in gloss black versus a matte black. It definitely has a presence to it.”

The Charger 392 that was unveiled at Spring Fest rolls on black Vapor Chrome wheels, which are a signature to the SRT brand with the Chrysler Group family of vehicles. Also, adding to the “tough” look of the car is the fact that the hood bulges are painted in black, giving the hood a two-tone look and finish. The roof and rear spoiler are also black, as are the mirrors. A heavy accent-traced stripe with a decal starts at the front fascia and runs to the corner of the rear fascia and reads “SRT.”
“The stripe and decal complement the black on the upper side of the car really well and ties into the black on the wheels,” said Trostle. “It creates a really cool look. Plus, it has the badging of SRT on the side as well.”

To match the ‘392’ moniker on the 392 Charger, a limited run of 392 cars will be produced beginning later this model year. Available colors will be: Bright White, Billet Silver, Plum Crazy, HEMI® Orange and TorRed.
